Traditional Nursing Uniform vs. Nursing Scrubs
September 20, 2008
Uniforms are created for two basic reasons: one is to maintain a standard corporate image for a given industry or company. The other purpose is to allow the wearer to be able to efficiently work on his tasks without having to worry about the clothes he’s wearing. A uniform sets one industry or profession apart from all other industries.
The popular perception
When asked what a nursing uniform looks like, the first thought that comes to mind is a pristine white dress with a nurse cap and white shoes. Over the years, the typical nursing attire has developed into several different designs depending on the facility where the individual works. Hospitals and other health care facilities usually prescribe their own design of the traditional nursing uniform. These days, however, much attention is focused on the comfort of the wearer; hence, nursing scrubs have started to replace the traditional garb.
More dignified
There are varied opinions with regards to which type of uniform is better. There are those who believe that the traditional uniform is better than nursing scrubs because the attire looks more formal. It is also more commonly associated with nurses making professionals who wear it easier to identify. They feel that patients will be able to easily identify nurses based on the traditional attire because this is how they perceive health care providers in their minds. Those who wear scrubs can be easily mistaken for housekeeping staff. Some people also feel that wearing nursing scrubs is akin to being garbed in your sleep clothes at work. They may be appropriate during surgery but they are not exactly suitable when you’re doing rounds at the hospital.
Comfort and efficiency
The main proponents of the medical scrubs as appropriate nursing uniform are mostly composed of health care professionals themselves. They are the people who understand how it feels to be garbed in white uniforms when you have to be up and about throughout your whole shift. They are inclined to agree that traditional nursing uniforms are effective for easier identification but nursing scrub sets are more comfortable.
Scrubs are preferred because they are more functional. They allow the wearer more freedom of movement. If you’re in the health care field, you need to be always ready for any emergency or eventuality. You have to be always on your feet to attend to the needs of your patients. Medical scrubs allow them to run, sit, stand, squat and do a whole range of movements comfortably. A nurse’s efficiency highly rests on the level of comfort that his or her clothes offer.
So which is better?
It really depends on your personal taste and, of course, which generation you belong to. Traditional nursing uniforms are naturally preferred by those who have the mindset of the previous decades. For the modern health care provider, medical scrubs are much more appropriate for addressing the demands of his job.
