The Psychology Behind Cartoon-Print Scrub Tops
September 13, 2008
Nursing scrubs are the new trend in hospitals and medical facilities today. While there are still facilities that allow their employees to wear the typical white uniforms, there are those that encourage health care providers to go for scrubs because these items allow more freedom of movement – something that any nurse or doctor would need as he should always be ready to take on any patient’s emergency.
Medical scrubs come in all sorts of colors and designs. There are hospitals where employees are asked to wear color-coded scrubs according to the department where they are assigned. For instance, blue for surgery, green for pediatrics, etcetera. But there are smaller medical facilities that allow their health care providers to wear nursing uniforms in the design of their choice.
Aside from the comfort that nursing scrubs offer, did you know that these items of clothing have an effect on patient’s and how they perceived their health providers? According to psychologists, colors and patterns elicit different kinds of emotions from the person viewing them so that different colors can affect different types of people in various ways. Green, for instance, is a calming color and is easier on the eye. A lighter shade of blue is great for helping the mind relax as well because it reminds one of a clear blue sky. Vivid primary colors attract children and this probably explains why cartoon images come in really bright colors.
Colors can make us happy. Familiar patterns can start a conversation rolling. Take the case of cartoon-print scrub tops, for instance. These uniforms are great for nurses and other health professionals who are working around children. Many children enjoy watching cartoon shows and they are always interested about seeing their favorite characters everywhere – even on the nurse’s clothes. Seeing the nurse wear scrubs printed with cartoon characters makes her look more approachable. Children tend to perceive her as friendly – someone who wouldn’t hurt them.
Because these scrubs come in happy colors, children feel more relaxed around their wearer as well. So if you’re going to work around children, make sure to buy a lot of print scrub tops to show the little ones that you’re on their side.
